Tanning is never a welcome consequence of stepping out in the sun. Despite all of your best efforts, you may still face tanning due to inadvertent sun exposure. You can use the following home remedies to remove the tan instead of applying cosmetic bleaches or skin lightening creams. These products may cause more harm than good since the effectiveness and side effects of their ingredients is doubtful.
1. Lemon juice
The juice of lemons contains citric acid, which is a natural skin lightening agent. It gets rid of age spots, blemishes, and pigmentation. Cut open a lemon and rub it directly onto your hands. Alternatively, you can squeeze the juice of the lemon and use a cotton ball or a wash cloth to apply it on the hands. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes until it dries. Wash off with cold water and apply hand lotion liberally to keep hands soft and moisturized.
Sugar granules can be added to lemon juice for more effectiveness. Sugar acts as a natural exfoliating agent and cleanses the skin. Rub half a lemon along with sugar on your hands until the granules have dissolved. Leave this on for 20 minutes until it dries on your skin. Rinse your hands in cold water.
Yoghurt is another effective ingredient for removing sun tan from hands. It contains lactic acid which works to fade sun spots and lift tan. A paste of yoghurt, lemon juice, and gram flour should be applied to the hands and left on for 5 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.
Potato is very effective for lightening the skin tone and removing dark tan. They contain vitamin B3, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin E, and vitamin C which are needed to maintain healthy skin. Potato juice also soothes sunburnt skin.
Potatoes should be mashed up in a blender after peeling the skins. This paste should be applied to the hands and allowed to dry for 30 minutes. Then, wash off with cold water.
You can also add lemon juice to the potato paste to increase its effectiveness.
4. Aloe vera
Aloe vera can lighten skin, strip away tan, and moisturize the skin. Apply fresh aloe vera gel to tanned hands before bedtime. Wash off with cold water in the morning.
5. Tomato juice
Tomato contains antioxidants that maintain the suppleness of skin and prevent early aging. Its juice is quite effective in removing sun tan. Make a paste of mashed tomatoes, add yoghurt and lemon juice and blend until you get a smooth consistency. Leave it on for 20 minutes and wash off with water.
Tomato juice removes heat from the body, thus cooling skin.
6. Cucumber juice
A mixture of cucumber juice, lemon juice, and turmeric powder can be used to lift tan away from the hands. Cucumber also soothes and cools sunburnt skin. Apply the mixture for 20 minutes and then wash off with warm water.
Cucumber slices can also be rubbed directly on tanned hands.
Almonds can be very beneficial in treating tanned hands. Soak 6 almonds overnight and grind them in a blender the next day. Add an equal quantity of milk cream and make a paste. Apply this paste on hands and leave it on for 30 minutes. If you feel that milk cream is too greasy, you can add raw milk instead. Wash off with lukewarm water.
Almonds contain vitamin E that helps remove tan.
8. Gram flour
A mixture of gram flour and rose water is helpful in removing tan from the hands. Leave the paste on the hands for 20 minutes and wash off with tepid water. Lemon juice and yoghurt can also be added to this paste.
Gram flour removes dead skin cells as well as pigmented skin.
9. Sandalwood powder
Sandalwood powder removes sun tan, lightens skin, and keeps it healthy. A paste of sandalwood powder, turmeric powder, and rose water should be applied to tanned hands for 30 minutes. Once it is dry, wash off using cold water.
10. Turmeric powder
Turmeric powder mixed with lemon juice and rose water is another effective way to get rid of tanned hands. Raw milk can also be added to this mixture for more benefits. Wash off with a mild cleanser since turmeric tends to stain the skin.
