Travelers leaving China for Australia will now have to take the COVID-19 test and show proof that they did not test positive before they can go. As a response to a large number of illnesses in China, officials in Canberra said they took this step because “virus strains could develop in that country.”

Australia Joins Various Nations to Ban Chinese Citizens from Leaving the Country

Australia has joined the ranks of nations that have banned Chinese citizens from leaving the country. Examples of these countries are listed below: India, Spain, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The administration in Canberra has stressed that the measures are only preventive and interim.

Mark Butler, the federal minister of health, has told local media outlets that he was worried about “a lack of detailed information about the [COVID-19] situation in China.” He pointed out that Beijing officials needed to give out more genome sequencing information.

Australia thinks sharing information is vital if new types of viruses are to be found as soon as they appear. Australian and Chinese relations have been strained in the past due to the COVID-19 virus. Before his resignation in 2020, center-right Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for an investigation into the source of a virus discovered in China.

Australia Voices Disapproval of Human Rights Violations in China

The call made the government in Beijing very angry, and things quickly got worse between the two countries. China’s military tensions in the South China Sea are getting worse, and the way it treats Taiwan, which it claims as its land, is also a source of conflict. Australia has also said that it doesn’t like how China treats its Muslim Uighur minority and how it cracks down on pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

China has placed import restrictions on coal, wine, and barley from Australia. Some people have said that Australia is suffering from “anti-China fever” because of what they say is economic pressure from Beijing. Since a centre-left administration was elected in May in Canberra, there have been many high-profile encounters between top government officials, suggesting an improvement in diplomatic ties.

Even though Australia wants to be stable and work together with China, its most significant economic partner, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, said in December that differences were inevitable. Recent government data shows about 15,000 new cases of COVID-19 in Australia every week.
