No matter how famous and reputed, events and people have their highs and lows. Started in 1959 to laud and award the stars of arts, Grammy Awards have seen their highs and lows too. The beginning of Grammy Awards was quite interesting in that they started because the Hollywood Boulevard couldn’t accommodate the number of stars who did well for arts and so they had to be awarded in some way. Grammy Awards 2014 ceremony held on January 26, 2014 was the 56th award ceremony and even though it had its bad and controversial moments, the event was a successful one overall.
The Grammy Awards Of 2014 – An Overview
There were some great performances by the renowned music stars and the newbies too. The management has always been great at keeping a few things as a surprise and so there were some good surprises in the performances as well. The award ceremony was held in Los Angeles, California at the famous multi-purpose 150 feet tall sports arena called the Staples Center. The nomination and wins at the award ceremony were for the period of October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2013. The noticeable change in this year’s award ceremony was that there were a total of 82 categories to be awarded in contrast to the 81 categories from the previous year’s award ceremony.
Top Mentionable Performances At The Award Ceremony
Beyonce and Jay Z Performing on ‘Drunk in Love’
The most mentionable performance was the first performance that opened the show; Beyonce performing on her song drunk in love. If there’s one word to define this performance it is sexy. Some people must have felt pretty uncomfortable since the family hour was still running when the performance was in progress. Some more juice was added to the performance when the internationally famous Jay-Z, Beyonce’s husband, joined her in her performance on stage. The duet performance from Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons was another mentionable performance at the event.
The best thing about this duet performance was that it was unexpected and unpredicted. The two artists made a mixture of two songs, each from one artist, to come up with a track that made the people applaud and laud. Another remarkable performance was from Katy Perry on the track “dark horse” and this performance could easily be called bizarre. The performance was amply rich in choreography. The audience and viewers got lucky when the stage was adorned with some of the most mentionable and remarkable stars of the time namely Stevie Wonder, Nile Rodgers, Daft Punk and Pharrell.
Pink didn’t come up with anything new and did her acrobatic stuff on the stage but she really knows how to make it work every time. She performed on two tracks: “try” and “just give me a reason”. She was doing the mesmerizing acrobatic performance while the people were still wondering where she got all that strength from. Having half of the “beatles” on stage was another great moment that people saw at the 56th Grammy Awards. Paul McCartney was joined by Ringo Starr as they performed and brought people under their spell with “queenie eye”.
Kacey Musgraves Performing at Grammy’s Award Show
The cutest performance of the night was definitely given by Kacey Musgraves. She looked beautiful with her band but her dress was without a doubt something to look at. It was cute and it made her look phenomenal. She performed the song “follow your arrow” with her band but the most eye-catching part of the performance other than Kacey herself was the dresses worn by the band. The dresses were lighted with, of course, lights and even the boots had lights on them and this made this performance the cutest and one of the most memorable ones of the night.
Some performances that were not really bad but could have been better include the performance from Lorde who performed with gargoyles making some noises and Metallica and Lang Lang who performed together to make “one” a memorable performance. As said before, the performances could have been better but you won’t say they were bad at all. Sara Bareilles and Carol King performed at the piano but this performance didn’t need any improvement. The only problem with this performance was its placement in the sequence and by this time many people had already shown up on stage with a piano performance.
Some Moments at the Event That You Might Have Missed On TV
You must have missed Ken Elerich, the director, who was trying his skills to bring energy into the crowd just before the show started. There were just too many things that he encountered when he came to the stage and that’s when he couldn’t really do what he was supposed to do. However, he managed to make Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney sing a few lines of the birthday song. Another moment that you might have missed is when the flustered Lorde after receiving her Grammy went back to her seat unlike any other artist who would actually take the award and go backstage.
Kacey Musgraves and her band were wearing some unusual wardrobe for their performance in the show but did you know that they were already caught setting up behind the stage before their performance? You might have seen standing ovations for many performances from some great shining stars but did you notice that the presenters of the program, Zac Brown and Martina Mc Bride, didn’t get even an appreciable amount of applause? You thought Pink was undaunted with her aerial performance of “Try” but did you see that there was a safety net for her protection on the stage?
John Legend Performing “All of Me”
John Legend played “all of me” and the crowd got drowned into a sea of pure talent and inexplicably beautiful voice. Well, you couldn’t see the luxury suites of the arena that didn’t pay any attention to the performance and the constant noise kept coming from those suites as if there was a party in progress. You might have missed this moment but it was cringingly epic that a friend of Taylor Swift and herself stood up to show their love for the Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar’s performance but kept on dancing all alone for first half of the song while the rest of the crowd was still seated.
The Controversies During The Grammy Awards
How could an event be an interesting event without having its controversial moments? There were some controversial moments that took place as the show was in progress but as a whole the show was successful. The first controversy, which didn’t really involve the show but related to it, was the dropping out of cable service from AT&T when the mass wedding was taking place on the stage. Another big controversy was for the nomination of Celebration Day among the other undisputed best rock albums of the year. The nomination was not accepted by the critics and people who were technically scrutinizing this nomination.
Celebration day is not actually an album that should be considered as rock album of the year; this is what a large group of people believe. They believe that this entire album was a live performance by the band Led Zeppelin and that the only way it could have been nominated was when it had on it at least one new song. The album was a live performance of various old and very old songs of the band by Led Zeppelin and nothing else. This place could have been easily given to an album that brought new stuff to the masses, even if it was not as much appreciated as Celebration Day was.
The Mentionable Wins Of The Day
Lastly, let’s talk about stuff that Grammy Awards were started for in the first place; wins and nominations. Other than the nomination of Led Zeppelin’s live album “celebration day” there weren’t any mentionable controversies over the nominations and wins at 56th Grammy Awards. Some of the highlights of the nominations include the following:
Get Lucky by Daft Punk, featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers
- Record of the year award went to Daft Punk’s “get lucky” that featured Pharrell and Nile Rodgers.
- Album of the year also went to Daft Punk for Random Access Memories.
- Song of the year was awarded to “royals” from the album Pure Heroine performed by Joel Little and Ella Yellich O’Connor. The song was written by Lorde.
- The best new artist went deservingly to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Worth competitors in this category were Kacey Musgraves and Kendrick Lamar.
Bruno Mars at the Grammy 2014
- Best pop vocal album award was given to Bruno Mars for Unorthodox Jukebox.
- Daft Punk bagged another award for best electronica/dance album for his “random access memories”.
- Best rock performance award went to Imagine Dragons for radioactive from their album night visions.
- There was no nomination for best metal performance for Metallica this time and from some great contenders such as Dream Theater and Anthrax, the award went to Black Sabbath for “god is dead?”
- The best rock song award went to “cut me some slack”.
- Best rock album went controversially to “celebration day” from Led Zeppelin. The point of controversy is not the band or performance but the fact that this was an album with live performances of all the old songs of the band – there was nothing new on it.
- Rihanna manage to take a Grammy for bust urban contemporary album for her “unapologetic”.
- Macklemore and Ryan Lewis bagged the award for best rap performance for “thrift shop”. The best rap album award of the year also went to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for “the heist”.
- Best country album award went to the well-deserving and the cute Kacey Musgroves.
And then there was a long list of categories involving various artists, albums and songs. As mentioned earlier, the total number of categories at the 2014 Grammy Awards ceremony was 82. It hasn’t even been a week since the award ceremony took place so there will be a lot of stuff in the news in the coming days.
