Written by Sylvester Stallone, Katrin Benedikt and Creighton Rothenberger, the Expendables 3 is a sequel to The Expendables 2, an action film that was released in 2012. This American ensemble action movie 2014 is the third installment in the Expendable film series and is directed by Patrick Hughes. The returning cast members of the film include Jet Li, Sylvester Stallone, Terry Crews, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Randy Couture and Dolph Lundgren. Some new cast members are Mel Gibson, Glen Powell, Kelsey Grammer, Wesley Snipes, Robert Davi, Ronda Rousey, Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford and Kellan Lutz. Director Patrick Hughes added to the cast and also enhances the firepower in the Expendables 3 by giving them knives, machine guns, grenades, handguns, planes, helicopters and even a train is blown up. With so many armaments blowing up and various actors doing their part, it seems that the director forgot to add in the story, smart dialogues or even a decent screenplay. As far as the story is concerned, the movie has an action-packed start where a motley mercenary group called Expendables led by Barney (Stallone) and Lee Christmas (Statham) are on the mission of rescuing Doc Death (Wesley Snipes), a former colleague from a prison. Some surprised prison guards, a blown up train and chopper are involved in the scene. Next we move on to Somalia, where an arms dealer, who is actually an expendable gone-wrong called Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson) is to be taken, but it goes awry. The CIA pointperson (Ford) tells Barney to get some fresh blood for taking in Stonebanks. Barney goes to Bucharest with four new expendables who mock him and his methods. The young ones become captives and Barney barely escapes and Stonebanks eludes capture and doesn’t answer for his crimes. Now, the old and new expendables come together to battle an army. While most of the cast stick to their old tics and mannerisms, it is Banderas and Gibson who capture the attention. The former is a mercenary who doesn’t kill as much as he talks and gives you a few laughs. However, the film goes to Gibson entirely as this arms dealer who buys abstract arms and eyes up women is immense fun. He considers his former colleagues Deleteable and is frustrated when his army doesn’t manage to kill them. His consternation is shared by the public because what is the point of the Expendables when not a single one is killed? This movie is for those people who are fans of the action thriller films of the 80s and wish to take a walk down memory lane with some old heroes. This third film in the series made the feeblest debut and secured the fifth position in the charts by earning $ million through Lionsgate. Stallone is still not ready to give up on the series and has even expressed the thought of broadening the appeal to a whole new lot of fans. Overall, the Expendables 3 didn’t garner much success in the US box office.
