You have decided to start blogging. This is an excellent idea, but you are wondering how to start a blog. You do some research on the internet and get bombarded by information and instructions. This can be extremely confusing because you don’t know who to listen to and how to go about setting up your own blog. Every new blogger goes through the same stage so it isn’t anything to worry about. Basically, there are four steps involved in setting up your blog. You don’t have to have any coding or technical expertise to accomplish your goal. Follow the four steps below and you are good to go:
- Choose your blogging platform.
The first thing you have to do is decide where you want to build a blog. If you have done some research, you have probably come across some popular names such as WordPress. This is one of the biggest blogging platforms that exist nowadays and it comes with countless add-ons and plugins along with infinite ways to customize the layout and design of your blog. You also have other alternatives in the form of Blogger and Tumblr. These platforms offer you an easy setup, tons of layouts and themes, proper support and great form and functionality.
- Decide between self-hosting and free hosting.
This is one of the biggest decisions you have to make i.e. deciding if you want to make your blog for free or you are willing to pay for it. Free blogs are offered by all major platforms, which are ideal for you if blogging is just a hobby. There are some downsides of free songs such as limits in monetizing, adding plugins, uploading files etc. You don’t have full ownership either and no flexibility for choosing domain name. A self-hosted blog is the opposite as it gives you ownership, name choosing flexibility and unlimited bandwidth for images, videos and other content.
- Choosing domain and hosting.
It is now time to decide a domain name for your blog, which will be the URL for your website. Pick something that’s unique and relevant to your topic. Next, you need to select a hosting company, which will make your blog visible for people on the internet. Make sure your hosting provider supports WordPress or whatever blogging platform you have chosen so you can install it right away from the admin panel.
- Designing your blog.
This is the fun part where you are in control and you can decide how your blog looks. Choose themes that can be customized easily and are also professional. Bear in mind that the design of your blog has to reflect your personality and the purpose of the blog. Make it easy to navigate so people stick around. Don’t make your blog ugly because it might bore people and drive them away. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to make a rainbow. Keep it simple and unique and that will do the trick.
