Know Your Scents: A Guide to the 5 Main Types of Perfumes

It is not unusual for both men and women to have a collection of different scents. Although some may want to be known for wearing a signature fragrance, having several perfumes on hand makes it easy for you to choose the one that best suits your mood or an important event that you are attending.

If you are looking to expand your scent collection, you will do well to get a perfume that you don’t have yet. By doing so, you will have a great selection to choose from as you choose the best one that complements your mood or will make you stand out on any kind of occasion.

But what are the main types of perfumes? These are:

1. Parfume

Also known as Extrait de parfum or pure perfume, this type has the highest fragrance concentration. It contains around 15 to 40 percent essential oils, but in most products, concentration is generally set between 20 and 30 percent.

When compared with the different types of perfumes, parfum lasts the longest, usually between six and eight hours. Additionally, it is typically pricey since it has a high concentration of fragrance.

If you have sensitive skin, you will do well to stock up on parfum because it contains less alcohol than other fragrance types. It’s also the least likely to dry out the skin.

Chanel N°5 and Paco Rabanne 1 Million Parfum are two of the most popular products that are considered pure perfume.

2. Eau de Parfum

This type of perfume has the next highest concentration of perfume oils. It usually contains 10 to 15 percent of perfume essence concentration and a bit more alcohol and water in its formulation.

Due to its slightly higher alcohol and water content, the scent of eau de parfum is often lighter and lasts between four to six hours.

Eau de parfum is more affordable than parfum but still commands a high price, especially if you get one from well-known brands.

If you want to buy a Tom Ford perfume in Kuwait, the brand’s most popular eau de parfum fragrances include Fougere D’Argent for men and Rose Prick for women.

3. Eau de Toilette

Also known as EDT, this type of perfume contains fragrance concentrations ranging between 5 and 15 percent. It has more alcohol than the parfum and eau de parfum variants.

Due to its higher alcohol content, the scent of EDTs lasts for three to four hours on a single spray. They are also classified on the lower spectrum of perfume prices, too.

Eau de toilettes are the top picks for summer perfumes and daily use since they are lighter yet still have a fragrance that stands out.

4. Eau de Cologne

Eau de cologne or EDC has less fragrance concentration than the first three types of perfumes. Because of this, it is highly affordable and quite popular among shoppers.

Most EDCs contain between two and five percent of perfume oil. As such, they last only for a few hours, usually two.

They also contain a higher amount of alcohol and, thus, are not suitable for people with sensitive skin.

5. Eau Fraiche

Literally translated as freshwater, eau fraiche perfumes have the lowest concentration of essential oils, usually around one to three percent only.

Eau fraiche perfumes are inexpensive, which makes them a great buy if you don’t have a big budget for your next fragrance. They are also exceptionally light and dissipate within an hour or two of spraying.

But since they are inexpensive, you can buy your favorite scents repeatedly and use them as often as you need or want.

Whether you are leaning towards well-known branded or niche perfumes in Kuwait, knowing the different types of bottled scents can help you make smart buying decisions as you expand your collection of fragrances.
