How to Choose an Estate Agent

Selecting an estate agent is a very important decision due to which you should always take your time. This is not a process to be hurried because you will be giving them the responsibility of handling your property. Then, how should you make your choice? Here are some steps that can help you out:

Ask for recommendations

Even though this seems obvious, most people don’t do so. It is always good to ask friends, family members and coworkers who have bought or sold property about the estate agents they used.

Check their credentials

Lots of estate agents are members of trade bodies. This is a good thing because it means they have to follow a code of conduct, which indicates a higher level of diligence and professionalism. When you are looking at different estate agents, make sure you choose one who is a member of notable trade bodies. You can easily find this information on their website.

Interview at least three agents

You need to shortlist estate agents, but don’t shorten the list too much. Invite them to take a look at your property and value it. You are not looking for someone who will offer you the highest value because it could just be a ploy to win your business. You need to find a fair and honest estate agent, who doesn’t overvalue your property and then later doesn’t get a buyer for that price.

Ask them some questions

There are some things that you should ask potential estate agents before hiring them. This includes when they were established, what experience they have and how they do their job. How will they advertise your property? Who will manage the viewings? Asking these questions give you an idea of what kind of estate agent you will sign up with if you choose them.
