The Screen Actors Guild Awards 2016

On Saturday, 30th January 2016, the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were hold for honoring the best achievements in television and film performances for the year 2015. The nominees had been announced on December 9th, 2015. The strange thing about the SAG awards is that they are regarded as a precursor to the Oscars in the case of films, but the television awards have no impact whatsoever on the Emmys, which are held in September.

This year’s SAG awards made quite safe choices as far as television is concerned and righted some perceived wrongs, much in the same way as those made by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences a couple of months ago. For instance, Kevin Spacey had been snubbed by the Emmys, but he took away his second SAG award.

As opposed to the all-white nominees in this year’s Oscar, the Screen Actors Guild award provided a stark contrast as numerous black performers took away some major awards, so much so that the hashtag #SAGsSoBlack was trending on Twitter. Here are the nominees and winners at this year’s Screen Actor Guild Awards:

Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award

Carol Burnett

None of the winners at this year’s SAG awards were unexpected or undeserving. Even while correcting some of the mistakes made by the Emmy awards, the Screen Actors Guild awards played it incredibly safe and this is the ultimate hallmark of the biggest award ceremony for television.
