Insiders Being Blamed For Sony Hack
According to the latest reports, it was another group that provided the data to hackers so they could gain access to the internal network of Sony because their target is also the gaming network of the firm. A self-proclaimed member of the Lizard Squad said in an interview that Guardians of Peace had been provided with stolen data by them. Several attacks have been carried out by the GoP on Sony because they wanted to put a stop to the release of The Interview, the comedy film. In comparison, it was only the PlayStation Network that was targeted by the Lizard Squad and they managed to get it offline on Christmas Day.
The self-identified senior member of the Lizard Squad said in an interview that members of the group knew some members of the Guardians of Peace. However, the spokesman said that despite the connection, their group didn’t actively participate in the attacks that were mounted on Sony by the GoP. The attacks made by the Guardians of Peace had exposed confidential information about numerous employees of Sony and had also shared thousands of emails sent between movie makers, film stars and employees. The member of the Lizard Squad said that some of the employee logins were handed over by them to GoP so they could start their initial attack on Sony.
This is the first acknowledgement made by the Lizard Squad regarding their connection to Guardians of Peace. But, this information gives rise to doubts regarding the theory circulating that North Korea planned these attacks on the internal systems of Sony. The FBI accused the state of being responsible for the attack because the movie called the Interview is based on a fictional plot of an American to kill Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader and formal complaints about the movie have also been filed by Pyongyang.
Nonetheless, it has also been reported that US investigators are looking into the possibility that the work was ‘contracted out’ by North Korea as that would explain how GoP and Lizard Squad were able to form links. The member of the Lizard Squad did state that all members of the organization belong to European Nation. Sony had been forced to delay the planned release of the movie because of the GoP attacks, but it has been put up on cinemas now and can also be viewed online. Over the first three days of its release, the movie has already managed to rake in about $15 million through downloads only.
The member of the Lizard Squad did not provide details about how they got their hands on the login information of employees of Sony. It is possible that the information was uncovered while they were searching for ways to hack into the PlayStation gaming network. During 2014, the Lizard Squad has repeatedly carried out attacks on Sony’s network and various others. On Christmas Day, lots of gamers found they couldn’t log in because the Xbox Live Network was compromised by the Lizard Squad for hours. As per the spokesperson, the attacks only meant to display the weaknesses in the security system.
