What Arrangements Can Be Made for Children With Special Needs in Singapore
Children are one big blessing. There are many parents to be who feel unsure about the whole parenthood thing, but one thing is for sure–holding that little bundle of joy in their arms for the first time more than makes up for anything. As children grow up, however, there can be challenges along the way–particularly for children with special needs.
It is not easy to have a child with special needs–but then again, it is not so difficult anymore either, given the special needs services available to make everyone’s lives easier. There used to be a stigma on people with special needs, but now parents no longer live in denial and have whatever it is that needs to be done in order for their children to lead fulfilling lives.
This is why it is incredibly important for parents to have their children assessed by a professional especially if they have a feeling that they may need special needs services. Sometimes, it is hard for a regular person to read signs of this, as they may be really very subtle. These are some of the conditions children may need special needs services for:
- Specific Learning Differences
- Dyslexia and Dyspraxia
- Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia
- Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder
- Asperger’s Syndrome
- Psychological and Behavioural concerns
- Childhood development issues
- Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Non-Verbal difficulties
- Auditory and Sensory issues
It is important that an assessment be made as early as possible. Educational Psychology assessments usually consist of 1-3 sessions with the psychologist working with the child. What is done and how much is needed depends on the age of the child, the purposes of the assessment and the kinds of strengths and weaknesses the child has. The aim is to start with the concerns about learning or behaviour expressed by parents, teachers or sometimes the child and to try to provide sympathetic but objective information about the child’s background abilities and current academic skills, and then evaluate whether there are serious difficulties and how great are the problems for the child, the patents and any teachers and tutors involved.
After getting the results of this assessment, there are various programs and therapy that children can undergo in order to manage the problem before it gets to be too much of a problem.
Indeed, special needs services are much more equipped in handling both parents and special needs children. It is a big relief especially for those who do not know how to handle the situation the best way they can, and eventually it becomes a win for everyone involved as the child can grow up to lead a relatively normal life.
