2 Different Worlds in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the largest islands of the Canary archipelago located in its north-eastern part. It is known as the “island of fire-breathing mountains”. 1/3 of the island is covered with lifeless basalt and ash, because of volcanic eruptions. It happened in 1730 when 30 volcanoes erupted almost simultaneously.

Lanzarote attract tourists for its fantastic volcanic landscapes and special charm. If you’re on holiday in Lanzarote, you can observe 2 different worlds. One is an underground world, which is made by lawa flows; another is a fantastic unearthly landscape of the Timanfaya National Park, the major attraction of the island.

The Timanfaya National Park is very popular among tourists. Approximately 97.6% of the tourists who came to the island of Lanzarote visited this park. Timanfaya National Park offers a unique spectacle. It is a quite different world with fantastic landscapes, which consist of geological formations that appeared long before humans.

The scenery you see now has been in the bowels of the earth for millions of years. It was thrown out by volcano only in the 18th century.

Nowadays, the territory of the park is heavily guarded. It is forbidden to walk alone here in order to protect the unique natural conditions of this place.

But you have the opportunity of a special 40 minute bus excursion. Unfortunately, you cannot get off the bus. But open landscapes are striking even through the window. The cost of the bus trip is included in the ticket price of the national park.

You can also try 1 of the 3 hiking trails, accompanied by English-speaking guide, if the bus excursion doesn’t satisfy you.

Cueva de los Verdes

Locals discovered these underground tunnels long ago. They used them as refuge during pirate raids. Many islanders were saved in this way. Geologists become interested in this cave in February 1964; some tunnels were opened for tourists.

Nowadays, the entire 6 kilometers of tunnels are well studied, but tourists can observe only about 1 kilometer. Anyway, your trip to Cueva de los Verdes will be very exciting! The architecture of the cave is diverse and chaotic. There are winding corridors, where you have to bend down; there are spacious halls up to 15 meters high and almost straight sections.

The cave has a real concert hall, which exists because of porous walls of the cave that do not resonate.

By the way, there is even a café in the Cueva de los Verdes! If the Timanfaya National Park looks like Martian landscapes, the Cueva de los Verdes is like an underground kingdom of dwarves. It has fantastic remarkable atmosphere and is definitely worth visiting!
