Essential Oils Used in Holistic and Homemade Toothpastes

There are dozens of toothpaste brands in the market these days and the question is how you go about choosing the right one for your dental needs. People often select their favorite depending on the flavor they like or the fact that it’s known to possess whitening abilities. It is also possible for people to opt for readymade natural or organic toothpaste or make it at home. The latter enables them to know exactly what’s being put into the toothpaste. Essential oils are one of the most important components of holistic homemade toothpaste, because they have antiseptic and nontoxic properties.

In some places, antibiotics are also replaced with selective grades of essential oils. Mouthwashes have ingredients such as thymol, which is taken from thyme oil, salicylate, which is found in birch oil, eucalyptol, which is found in eucalyptus oil and menthol that’s a prominent component of peppermint oil. It has been substantiated through testing and research that it’s safe for people to use various essential oils such as lime, clove, cinnamon, licorice, lemon, rosemary, eucalyptus and pepper, even when taken internally. They can be incorporated into toothpastes when they are being made at home or the oils themselves can be used for reaping their benefits.

You will be set once you add a little water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil to your toothbrush. Aroma therapist can be consulted for recommending the best brands of these oils and they can easily be purchased from any health store. However, people should be careful and not select brands that comprise of synthetics because they are added with chemicals to give them their unique smell. Toothpaste can easily be made at home using essential oils and some other easily available ingredients. People need to have some baking soda, coconut oil, a sugar substitute called Stevia and an essential oil of your choice preferably peppermint oil.

Soften coconut oil by mixing two tablespoons of it with a fork. 3 teaspoon of baking soda should be added to the oil along with four packets of Stevia or more for adding taste to it. Now add the essential oil to this mixture. Use a plastic container for storing this paste and keep it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. It is not necessary for people to use only one essential oil at a time. They can make a combination of lemon and cinnamon or mint oil and vanilla. You will be able to get clean and smooth teeth with this toothpaste, although it will not foam like the ones available at stores.

Mouthwashes can also be made with essential oils. This is because they are highly useful in freshening the breath of individuals without having to use any chemicals. Peppermint and lemon oil are typically the best choice for making either toothpaste or mouthwash. Because they are naturally occurring oils, they don’t have any risks and dangers associated with it and are completely safe. Holistic dentists are also recommending homemade toothpastes nowadays because of their benefits.
